Google Messages is finally adding chat themes to its standard text conversations. Users outside RCS can now personalize standard SMS chats with custom wallpapers, themes, and more. Chat themes aren’t a new thing to Google Messages. It was available for quite a long time, but was limited to RCS texts. That finally seems to be changing as the tech giant expands the feature beyond RCS.
Google Messages adds chat themes to standard text conversations
Google Messages introduced its newer chat themes feature in August. The feature was good; however, its main limitation was that it worked only with RCS conversations. The following restriction now appears to be gone. A Reddit user recently spotted the option in a regular text conversation, while Android Authority also confirmed its availability on a Pixel 6a.
The latest version of the app also adds a red dot in the conversation that prompts the user to try the feature. It is not known exactly when Google began rolling out chat themes for SMS. The firm has not published an official statement regarding the same. This brings us to the speculation that the rollout is still in its initial stage and a wider rollout, followed by an official announcement, is imminent.
Users can finally personalize SMS-based chats
Users can find the chat themes option from the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of a conversation. It is also available from the contact information page, which can be accessed by tapping the person’s name.
As you may know, the feature lets users choose from preset or custom wallpapers and select their preferred colors. However, there’s one difference. The RCS version of the similar feature changes the theme for both the sender and the recipient. In normal conversations, the selected theme is visible only on the device of the person who sets it.
