Microblogging social media platform Bluesky will get a new “communities” feature sometime this year. This will function as dedicated spaces to connect people with shared interests. They’ll be built on the decentralized AT Protocol, part of the ‘Atmosphere’ ecosystem, and, as Alex Benzer, head of product, puts it, “it’s a new structure for everyone.”

Benzer has listed out a few ideas that the company has in mind. He shares that, on Bluesky, users will be able to create communities, join them, post in them, and get updates. Meanwhile, the core features on Bluesky stay as is. The key is that communities live on the open web, so you users can customize them and add features using other Atmosphere apps and tools.
Each community will get a handle that doubles as a URL. For instance, for example, community-name.bsky.social or community-name.bsky.space. Visiting that URL takes you to the community’s custom homepage. Builders can also host a completely custom experience there instead.
Three privacy levels
Benzer adds that there will be three privacy levels for communities, including public (anyone can find, read, and post), invite-only (where anyone can find it, but you must be approved to read and post), and lastly, private (where you need a link to find it, and you must be approved to read and post). When you join a community, its posts show in your Discover feed.
There’ll be options to turn on activity notifications and get updates from communities you’ve joined. Each community would have its own feed, as per Benzer. Lastly, he adds that the company will reach out to community organizers and devs to learn more.
This development echoes Bluesky COO Rose Wang, who last week said that the company wants to stop being a “public square” and is taking inspiration from platforms like Reddit. Meanwhile, Meta’s Threads is currently testing the Communities feature.
