One of the advantages of streaming services like Netflix is that all your shows are on-demand. This means you get to watch what you want, when you want. In more traditional forms of TV, you’re at the mercy of the broadcasting station’s schedule. But now, it seems that Netflix is considering launching always-on channels in a bid to improve engagement.
Netflix considering always-on channels
A report from the Wall Street Journal says Netflix is trying to fix its engagement problem. To do that, Netflix is considering adding always-on channels to its service. This would be similar to other platforms like Pluto TV and Tubi, allowing users to launch the service and tune into something that’s already playing.
We know that sometimes it can be hard to find a show to watch on Netflix. Personally, there have been weeks where I don’t even use Netflix because I’ve binged all my favorite TV shows and movies. So Netflix thinks that maybe always-on channels could be a way for users to tune in, even if it means just leaving it running in the background.
But that’s not all. The report also suggests that the streaming platform is considering selling bundles. These bundles will include other streaming services. It also mimics what other services like Apple TV and Prime Video already offer. Perhaps with these changes, the company could help boost its engagement again.
Falling engagement
One of the downsides to on-demand services is that eventually you kind of run out of things to watch. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve gone through the entire library, but rather you’ve run out of things you want to watch. For example, just because you enjoy anime doesn’t mean that every anime series on Netflix is worth your time. Eventually, people kind of hit pause for a while until something good comes along.Â
In fact, there was a recent report from Bloomberg that Netflix is trying to figure out why the second seasons of its shows are seeing a huge drop in viewership. Whether or not these always-on channels and bundles will turn things around remains to be seen. But in the meantime, are these features and services you’d like to see from Netflix in the future?
