Even before Apple announced the iPhone Duo, it was already obvious that we would be looking at some kind of hybrid device that would be part iPad mini and part iPhone. This is largely thanks to its form factor, which unfolds more into a tablet-like shape than a square. Recently, during an interview with MKBHD, Apple’s SVP of software engineering Craig Federighi spoke about how the iPhone Duo and iPad overlap.
Here’s what Apple’s saying about the iPhone Duo and iPad overlap
In his interview with Federighi, the Apple exec admits that there is a bit of an overlap between the iPhone Duo and the iPad and how it has the potential to fill the same space as the iPad mini.
According to Federighi, “I find in my usage over the last few months, if I am starting on the iPhone, I happen to sit down, and I actually just want to go deeper into a piece of content, I want to read something, this device is extraordinary to open up, often in portrait actually, and page through some content. It’s fantastic. I think people are going to find their way. But I agree, for someone who maybe had an iPad mini or something, this device can often fill that space for them.”
In the video, MKBHD also shared his thoughts and opinions on the iPhone Duo. He also shared how he normally uses a foldable, which he says remains closed 70% of the time but unfolds when he needs the larger screen for better productivity.
The Apple pivot
What’s interesting is how Apple has pivoted from how it approached its products in the past. As MKBHD points out, the iPad has sat somewhere in the middle between the iPhone and Mac. It offered a mobile operating system but had a larger display for better media consumption and productivity. But at the same time, it wasn’t too powerful to the point it could replace a Mac computer. Apple at one point even publicly denied it had plans to merge iOS and macOS.
However, with the iPhone Duo, the lines between Apple products are definitely starting to blur. The fact that it supports the Apple Pencil could potentially make some customers buy the iPhone Duo over the iPad. This also wouldn’t be the only product whose lines Apple is trying to blur.
There are rumors suggesting that a touchscreen OLED MacBook is in the works. It is rumored to feature a specially designed UI that can change depending on whether you’re clicking around with a mouse or poking at its screen.
