Companies conduct layoffs from time to time so it’s not exactly something that’s rare or company specific. But what caught the attention of some recently is under its new CEO, John Ternus, Apple is holding its own round of layoffs. So the question is, what does it mean? Or does it mean anything at all?
Fresh layoffs take place under new Apple CEO
It has been less than a month since John Ternus took over as the new CEO of Apple, and layoffs are already happening under his watch. This is according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman who noted in his Power On newsletter that some employees are being let go from the company.
And no, it isn’t because Apple is doing badly under Ternus’ watch. But rather, the report suggests that a number of employees from Apple Fitness+ are being let go.
For those unfamiliar, Apple Fitness+ is a fitness subscription service that gives subscribers access to guided workout and meditation videos. If you have an Apple Watch, it gives you better integration by showing personal metrics on the screen. This lets you track your progress as you workout to these videos.
However, it seems that it isn’t exactly making enough money to justify it being around.
Apple Fitness+ not as popular as Apple would like
While we get what Apple was trying to do with Apple Fitness+, it seems that it isn’t catching on so well. Fitness videos and guided exercise videos aren’t new. In fact many of them make a lot of money, and presumably that was the goal Apple was going for. However, it hasn’t grown enough for Apple’s liking, especially compared to its other products and services.
That being said, Apple Fitness+ isn’t going away just yet. Gurman doesn’t think that Apple will cancel the service outright. This is because it could result in massive backlash, especially among users who are paying for it. Instead, Apple could try and reduce costs, such as conducting layoffs. Maybe it will eventually wind down, but that’s just speculation on our part.
Also, this might not be the only layoffs taking place. According to comments on Reddit, some believe there will be a shuffling of Apple’s inner circle once Ternus settles into his new role.
