Making a phone thinner almost always ruins its battery life, but Apple might be trying to solve that exact problem with its next ultra-thin device. A recent leak suggests the second-generation iPhone Air (also known as iPhone Air 2) will drop to a 5.2mm body while somehow squeezing in a higher-density battery that lasts longer than the first model.
According to Korean leaker yeux1122, Apple is trimming 0.4 millimeters off the original 5.6mm frame. That brings the phone down to match an unfolded iPhone Duo and undercuts Samsung’s 5.8mm Galaxy S25 Edge profile. Instead of shrinking the battery pack to hit that thinner target, Apple is reportedly switching to new higher-density battery tech that tops the 3,149mAh cell found in the current iPhone Air. The phone is also expected to keep its titanium frame and use the smaller front notch coming to the iPhone 18 Pro.
More efficiency under the hood
The battery upgrade is part of a broader push as Apple prepares to compete with Samsung’s upcoming silicon-carbon battery tech in the slim phone category. Inside the device, Apple is pairing the new battery with an A20 Pro processor, an updated N2 wireless chip, and a custom C2 modem. These components should draw far less power and help manage internal heat inside such a tight space.
If those efficiency improvements translate to real-world use, the upcoming iPhone Air 2 won’t just look sleeker. Apple aims to give users better daily battery life and more screen time than its thicker predecessor.
Adding the missing second camera
The firm is also addressing another major complaint from the first generation: the camera setup. Buyers who paid flagship prices for the original model were disappointed to get just a single rear lens. For the sequel, Apple is reportedly adding a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera right next to the 48-megapixel main sensor.
A planned spring 2027 release gives Apple plenty of time to change its mind. However, these early leaks suggest the company is serious about fixing the flaws that held back its first ultra-thin effort.
