Microsoft is doubling down on local artificial intelligence with a machine designed to run heavy models right on your desk. At a San Francisco event, the company unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, a $2,599 flagship built to handle complex AI tasks, 3D rendering, and high-end gaming without relying on cloud servers.
Pre-orders are open today, with official shipping starting October 16. ThatOn the outside, the 15-inch laptop packs a mini-LED display, a haptic trackpad, and a clever hardware addition: the world’s first magnetic breakaway USB-C port. Inspired by MagSafe, the universal connector snaps away safely if someone trips over your power cord, saving the 4.4-pound machine from crashing to the floor.
Nvidia RTX Spark hardware and 128GB memory
Inside, the Surface Laptop Ultra runs on an Arm-based Nvidia RTX Spark chip built on Blackwell architecture. Top configurations offer up to 128GB of unified memory and deliver one petaflop of compute performance. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang pointed out this figure matches the output of a 2016 data center server.
That extra memory capacity allows developers to run massive 120-billion-parameter AI models locally instead of paying recurring cloud API fees. To demonstrate that horsepower, Microsoft showed the laptop running GitHub Copilot, DaVinci Resolve, and Gears of War: E-Day all at once. According to Microsoft, the machine handles AI image generation 4.3 times faster and video generation 6.2 times faster than a MacBook Pro with Apple’s M5 Pro chip.

Smart hybrid AI and local execution containers
The Surface Laptop Ultra also introduces smart task management in Windows 11. Apps can automatically decide whether to process tasks locally on the GPU—marked by a small green leaf icon—or route heavier queries to the cloud.
To keep local AI coding tools from snooping through personal files, Windows 11 locks those agents inside secure execution containers. As memory shortages continue driving up PC prices across the industry, Microsoft is betting that power users will gladly pay up for hardware that keeps their AI workloads private and local.
