Apple is no stranger when it comes to bungled launches. Back in 2008, former Apple CEO Steve Jobs was furious over the disastrous launch of MobileMe. Then how can we forget the debacle that was Apple Maps. Then in 2024, Apple made another blunder with Apple Intelligence. Now, it looks like Apple is paying the price for that with the Siri settlement having been approved.
The $250 million Siri settlement just got approved
According to a July 17 court document, the Siri settlement has been approved, at least preliminarily, by a judge. The company agreed back in May to pay $250 million in a US class action lawsuit. However, it’s worth noting that there is no settlement website yet. There is a good chance that eligible customers might have to wait months before they can claim their $95 from the company.
But either way, it’s good news because it looks like things are progressing smoothly. So in reality, it’s really just a matter of time. Eligible iPhone users include those with the iPhone 15 Pro up to the iPhone 16 and must have purchased them between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025.
What happened? Why was Apple sued?
Just in case you’re unfamiliar, back in 2024, Apple took the wraps off Apple Intelligence. The company made a whole show of it, showing off what its AI could do. However, upon release, it fell way short of expectations. According to the reports, it seems that Apple’s marketing department got ahead of itself and boasted features, some of which weren’t even in development.
Even when it was released, it was released in parts. Many users were anticipating the revamped Siri, but Apple kept delaying it. This eventually led to the class action lawsuit alleging false advertising. Apple initially tried to defend itself, but ultimately chose to settle to “stay focused.”
The company did eventually launch the revamped Siri and Apple Intelligence, which was helped in a partnership with Google. So far, those who have tested the iOS 27 beta have reported that Apple Intelligence and Siri seem to be leaps and bounds better than before. However, the real test will be when iOS 27 is released to the public, which based on past releases should be around late September.
