
This year, Apple is expected to debut the A20 Pro chipset in its iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max series. Based on the rumors and predictions, it will be a chipset built using TSMC’s 2nm process. But come 2028, Apple is expected to launch iPhones with the A22 Pro chip built on the 1.4nm process.
Apple’s 2028 iPhones to feature 1.4nm chips
This is according to a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in which he predicts the 2028 iPhones will feature 1.4nm chips. We can’t say we’re too surprised by his prediction. After all, that seems to be where the industry is headed towards. It wasn’t too long ago that we were all blown away by 4nm chips, but now looking at what 2028 could bring, feels downright gigantic in comparison.
For context, Apple’s current iPhone 17 series features the A19 Pro chipset built on the 3nm process. This means that this year’s iPhones should bring about notable upgrades in terms of energy efficiency and performance. We’re not sure how big of a jump it will be compared to its 3nm siblings, so we’ll have to wait until later this year to find out.
The bigger surprise
That being said, the path from 2nm to 1.4nm isn’t surprising. What is surprising is Gurman’s report suggests Apple might split its business between TSMC and Intel. We had previously heard that Apple and Intel might be working together again for future chips. However, back then it was assumed that Intel would make older Apple chips, or chips that didn’t require the latest processes. That business would go to TSMC.
However, Gurman’s report suggests that Intel could actually get some of the 1.4nm business. Intel is already hard at work trying to make that happen. Until Intel’s new CEO’s guidance, the company is developing its 14A node for 1.4n chips. Assuming all goes to plan, it should be able to begin production in 2028.
It is kind of tight, so maybe the bulk of the business will go to TSMC. However, if Intel can scale up, that split could be more even for future chips. Landing Apple as a customer would also send a signal to the rest of the industry. It would signal that aside from TSMC and Samsung, Intel’s foundries are also worth considering, especially for companies that want chips built stateside.
