Apple Wallet recently added support for driver’s licenses in Virginia and Oklahoma, with the support soon expanding to three more states. This will bring the total number of participating US states close to 20. As a refresher, Apple first introduced support for digital IDs in the Wallet app back in 2021. They’ve become increasingly popular lately. Currently, 16 US states and Puerto Rico support the feature on iPhone.Â
Apple Wallet’s driver’s license support could soon expand to three more US states
Virginia and Oklahoma are the latest additions to Apple Wallet’s digital driver’s license support, joining in the past couple of months. It appears Utah, Kentucky, and North Carolina could follow soon. Evidence of Utah and Virginia being added to Apple’s backend for driver’s license support was spotted this summer. Virginia has now gone live, hinting that Utah could be among the next states to get support.
Meanwhile, Kentucky previously announced plans to support Apple Wallet driver’s licenses after upgrading its digital ID system this summer. The latest signs suggest that the upgrade is now complete, so the state could finally add Apple Wallet support soon, aligning with its original plan.
Making things a little more convenient for users
Then there’s North Carolina, which recently announced the launch of its new digital driver’s license system. It confirmed licenses will be supported in Apple Wallet by early 2027. There’s always a chance that additional states might add support in Wallet before these three states. We’ll only know when there’s an official announcement.
For what it’s worth, there’s apparently a noticeable increase in the number of states signing up to support driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet. For now, Utah, Kentucky, and North Carolina appear to be the most likely states to add support next. We will update when we hear more about this.
