Recently, Google Maps changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. People weren’t thrilled and for a brief moment, Google seemed like they were the only ones doing it. At that time, Apple Maps still hadn’t changed it to Lake America yet. But that is no longer the case as Apple has followed suit.
Apple Maps now adopts Lake America name too
According to reports, it looks like Apple Maps is now using the Lake America name as well. However, it should be noted that this change basically only affects users in the United States. For everyone else, including those living in Canada, the name of the lake is still called Lake Ontario.
That being said, there are still some holdouts. For instance, Waze and MapQuest still have yet to change the name, with the latter saying it does not plan to do so. This name change was the same back when the Gulf of Mexico was renamed to the Gulf of America, in which only users in the US could see the change, while everyone else saw the previous name.
Apple has yet to issue a statement regarding the change, but it seems unlikely they will. Google, on the other hand, defended the change, saying it was done to reflect name changes in official government sources.
What happened?
Just in case you’re hearing about this for the first time, on August 27, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order that mandated the name of Lake Ontario be changed to Lake America. This isn’t the first time Trump has tried to Americanize things. Like we said earlier, the Gulf of Mexico, renamed to the Gulf of America, was one of them.
According to the order, “In recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that the Lake officially be renamed as Lake America.”
Despite many believing the name change wasn’t necessary, it’s not surprising Apple and Google played along. Both tech companies have worked closely with the Trump administration in the past in an attempt to stay on his good side. Resisting this name change seems like a hill neither company wants to die on.
