Even before the Apple Vision Pro launched, there were rumors that Apple already knew it wouldn’t exactly be adopted by the mainstream. This was largely due to price, the lack of an ecosystem, and its design, which made it good for home/office use, not necessarily day-to-day. So, it’s not surprising that the Apple Vision Pro is off Apple’s roadmap in favor of smart glasses.
Apple ditching Vision Pro for smart glasses
This is according to a recent post on X by Apple insider and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. According to Kuo, he suggests that Apple has taken the Vision Pro off its roadmap in favor of smart glasses.Â
Prior to this, Kuo’s roadmap for Apple’s wearables included a Ray-Ban like smart glasses for 2027 and a lighter Vision Air. He also predicted a next-gen Vision Pro to arrive in 2028. But now, he claims the Vision Pro is essentially on the backburner while Apple focuses on smart glasses. Kuo’s post also suggests that Apple’s incoming CEO, John Ternus, signed off on this overhaul.
Some of the comments suggest that this is a wrong move by Ternus. However, we beg to differ. The Vision Pro’s problem wasn’t that it lacked functionality, it was simply too expensive. Priced at over $3,000, it wasn’t exactly something most people can afford. Even if they could, many struggle to find how it might fit in their daily lives.
Smart glasses, on the other hand, are an easier sell. We’ve already seen how successful Meta’s Ray-Bans are, so much so that even Google and Samsung are hopping on board the bandwagon. So, Apple designing and releasing a more affordable headset in the form of smart glasses makes a ton of sense.
What we know so far
Based on the rumors, Apple isn’t working with established glasses brands like Warby Parker, Gentle Monster, or Luxottica. Instead, the company is rumored to be designing the frame itself, which might use acetate as its material of choice. The smart glasses were rumored to launch by the end of 2026 and released in 2027.
However, a more recent report suggests that has changed. Apple may now only announce the smart glasses towards the end of 2027, which means its release will most likely take place in 2028. The reason for this is AI. Apple is reportedly trying to ensure its Visual Intelligence is up to scratch before releasing it.
