Apple Silicon comes in multiple tiers, depending on the computer. Base models usually get the base version of the chip, while more powerful computers like the higher-end MacBook Pros or Mac Studios get the M-series Max or Ultra chips. But did you know at one point in time, Apple almost released Extreme versions of its chips?
Apple worked on Extreme chips
According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Cupertino company had at one point in time developed Extreme versions of its Apple Silicon chips. This would place it one tier higher than the Ultra, which is Apple’s most powerful chip at the moment for its Mac computers.
Gurman claimed that Apple had developed the M2 Extreme and M3 Extreme chips. They were designed for Apple’s Mac Pro, which at that point in time was Apple’s most powerful Mac computer. Apparently these Extreme chips would double the number of both CPU and GPU cores as the Ultra.
However, Apple ultimately decided not to move forward with those chips. It seemed that they cost more to make. Plus, they were rather niche and there wasn’t much demand for the Mac Pro. In hindsight it was probably a good idea. Seeing as how prices are going through the roof these days, especially with the memory crunch, we’d hate to think how much these Mac Pros with the Extreme chip could cost.
Discontinued Mac Pro
That being said, Apple has since discontinued its Mac Pro computer. One of the advantages the Mac Pro had over the rest of the Mac computers was its customizability. Due to its desktop chassis design, it was more customizable compared to Apple’s other Macs. However, it was an extremely niche computer.
It was largely targeted at industry professionals who needed the raw horsepower that it provided. However, the launch of Apple Silicon and the Mac Studio meant that it was no longer as necessary as it once was. This led to Apple eventually discontinuing the computer earlier this year, essentially ending its 20-year run.
Apple hasn’t officially said anything yet. However, given that it is no longer listed on its website, we think that already speaks volumes.
