There have been rumors that Apple is developing a pair of AirPods with a built-in camera. That has since been proven to be true, and the source comes from none other than Apple themselves. This was discovered in a promo video for the AirPods Pro 4 inside of macOS 26.7 RC.
AirPods Pro 4 promo video leaked
According to a post on X by MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris, a promo video for the AirPods Pro 4 was discovered in macOS 26.7 RC. This means that as far as leaks are concerned, this is as legitimate as it gets.
In the promo video (see below), it shows someone wearing a pair of AirPods holding up a book. There’s a voiceover that says, “See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later.” There was also mention of Visual Intelligence, which is an AI tool developed by Apple that identifies objects, text, or search up real-world information using the iPhone’s camera. The video also more or less confirms what the rumors are saying about the device.
Just as a quick recap for those who missed the rumors, there has been talk that Apple is working on AirPods with a built-in camera. The camera is supposed to help users identify things around them as they walk around. This could be useful when identifying objects or saving it for later, as the video suggests, or it could also potentially be used for navigation.
For instance, the cameras could be used to identify street signs or landmarks. This would make it easier for a tool like Apple Maps to give users directions, instead of relying purely on GPS. This is just speculation on our part, but it seems like an obvious feature.
When is it coming?
Here’s where the rumors are a little conflicted. An earlier report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggested that Apple was close to finalizing the device. This suggested that its launch could take place alongside the new iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and Ultra phones. However, Gurman later said that Apple was planning to launch it in 2027.
But then, there was another report in July that claims Apple had put the project on ice. It is unclear why they would. There are obviously privacy implications. No one wants to be photographed or videoed without their knowledge, right? But then there’s this promo video inside an upcoming macOS update.
Did Apple forget to remove it, or could it be a sign that the earbuds are still on track? Either way, take it with a grain of salt, but what do you think of the feature? Are these a pair of earbuds you wouldn’t mind getting?
