Sometimes you get a call from an unknown number and you don’t answer. It goes to voicemail. Given the number of scam and spam calls out there, you might not be bothered to check. But what if it was a legitimate call? That’s something Google could help you with in the future. According to a recently-discovered patent, Google has created a system that will call businesses back for you using AI.
Google AI could call businesses back for you
According to the patent’s description, the system goes through a series of checks and actions on your behalf. For instance, you receive a call from the doctor’s office but for some reason you don’t answer. Based on the patent, the system will first check if its voice assistant can call the business back on your behalf.
If it can, users get the option on their screen asking if they want to use Google AI to call businesses back for them. If you allow it, the AI assistant will make the call and complete the task without you actually being involved. This means that if you’re too busy to call back or stay on the line, this patent will do all that for you.Â
So if your doctor called to reschedule an appointment, the AI will take note of that. It’s actually pretty cool, but given that it is a patent, we don’t know if there are actual plans to make it a reality. However, it’s not such a far-fetched idea, especially considering what Google has done in the past.
Not Google’s first rodeo
If all of this sounds slightly familiar, it’s because it is. This isn’t the first time that Google has attempted to use some form of artificial intelligence to answer calls on the behalf of users. If you forgot, Google launched its Duplex service several years ago. This was before Gemini and it used Google Assistant to help make calls on behalf of users.
It automated the process of helping users book restaurants, schedule appointments, and can stay on the line for those times when you call customer service and you’re put on hold. So in reality, this isn’t the first time Google has tried to automate the phone process. If anything, this patent seems to be an extension of that. But like we said, it’s hard to say if Google plans to actually commercialize it. Only time will tell.
