Besides streaming needs, tablets are often used for browsing purposes. With Android tablets, Chrome is usually the obvious pick for most users. One, because it’s feature-rich, and two, it comes pre-installed on devices. However, new reports on the web suggest that an annoying Chrome browser bug is affecting Android tablets across multiple OEMs.
Chrome bug reportedly prevents the app from launching on Android tablets
The issue was first reported on Reddit, as is the case most of the time, and was also highlighted on Chrome’s Issue Tracker. As for the bug, tapping the Chrome icon on Android tablets reportedly shows a “You can have up to 5 windows” error prompt. This is happening even if users have no other Chrome instances open. In fact, it happens even when you have no other apps open.
The Reddit user, “ExplodedSpaceToast,” is experiencing this on their Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+. Many users in the thread have corroborated the issue. Additionally, the comments also suggest it seems to be mainly affecting users on Chrome version 148.0.7778.178. But it doesn’t look to be specific to a particular version. Basic troubleshooting steps like clearing the cache and force-stopping the app don’t seem to be working.

Google is aware of the issue and is currently investigating it
Although the original Reddit post highlights a Samsung tablet, the issue extends beyond a single brand. While most of the bug reports have come from Samsung tablet users, it’s also affecting Xiaomi and Lenovo tablet users as well. This indicates that the issue likely lies with Chrome rather than the OEMs.
Fortunately, Google is aware of this, as a Chrome support manager has joined the discussion on the original Reddit post and said that the team is investigating reports of this behavior. The company is also asking for additional information to find the root cause.
Although there doesn’t seem to be any immediate fix, some users report that uninstalling Chrome and reinstalling it fixed it. So, you can give this a shot while Google officially releases a fix or try a different browser app.
