Android Auto is one of the most widely used features by car owners. It provides a hands-free, driver-friendly interface on the car’s infotainment screen. However, millions of phones running Android 10 could soon lose support for Android Auto. Some users have started seeing warnings saying their devices will no longer be supported. Google may be preparing to raise the minimum Android version required by the service.
Android 10 devices may no longer be able to run Android Auto services
Android Auto has been moving away from older Android versions for several years. Google periodically updates the minimum Android version requirement of the service. Back in 2022, the tech giant ended support for Android 8 Oreo and older devices. It then raised the minimum requirement to Android 9 Pie in 2024. Now, the latest reports suggest that Android 10 is next on the list.
Several users have reported that they’re getting a new warning whenever using Android Auto. The warning says the phone will no longer be supported and that Android Auto will soon stop working because the device cannot update to the required Android version. The warnings are also notable because they have reportedly appeared with wired connections. That could mean Google is preparing to bring the wired requirement in line with Android 11. Importantly, the following requirement is already generally required for wireless Android Auto.
Google has not shared an official statement yet
Users of Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, and Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact are among the ones who got the warning. For reference, these devices stopped receiving major updates after Android 10. Moreover, users on the latest Android versions have not reported any such warnings. This suggests that the devices running Android 10 may lose Android Auto support in the coming days.
As of right now, there is no official announcement from Google and no confirmed date for the reported change. Google’s support documentation still says wired Android Auto works with Android 9 Pie or newer. Wireless Android Auto, meanwhile, generally requires Android 11 or later.
