Android 17 QPR1 started hitting devices back on September 15, and there was a whole list of bug fixes that were issued as part of the update, but it also includes some changes to visual details such as the status bar icons.
These are just minor visual tweaks, but easy to miss if you aren’t used to paying attention to more minor details like a changing status bar icon. The Android 17 QPR1 stable update is available for most Pixel devices, but it has not yet reportedly arrived for the Pixel 11 series devices.
One of the bigger changes with the Android 17 QPR1 update that was pushed out recently was the customizable haptics. Basically, certain ringtones let you select from a variety if different vibration patterns that go off whenever you get the notifications for the associated app that is tied to that ringtone. This includes apps like Phone by Google for voice calls, as well as communication apps like Telegram and Discord.
Another change was the rounded wallpaper switcher that pops up when you long press on the home screen.
Android 17 QPR1 may have changed some status bar icons unintentionally
As reported by 9To5Google, the status bar icon for the mute status has now changed. Prior to Android 17 QPR1 it was a speaker with a crossed line through the middle of it. According to the new report, the update has changed this icon to a bell with a crossed line through it, which is what the icon used to be, but that was changed in Android 14.
The report also states that this change could have been made by mistake, while also noting that it didn’t show up until the stable version of Android 17 QPR1 that went out this week. The beta version of the release still showed the speaker icon with a crossed line through it.
