A couple of days ago, we reported that the Sony Xperia VIII is now receiving the Android 17 update. Well, Sony just shared more information about the Android 17 update and listed other devices that are getting it as we speak.
The bad news is, only five devices are getting the update, and that includes the Xperia 1 VIII. Well, at least according to what Sony shared. There was no mention of any additional phones that are set to get the update.
Android 17 is now rolling out to 5 Sony Xperia devices
The devices that are now getting the update are the Sony Xperia VIII, Xperia VII, Xperia VI, Xperia 10 VIII, and Xperia 10 VII. So we have the company’s flagship here, two of its predecessors, and two mid-range models from Sony.
It is worth noting that the update is rolling out in stages, so it may take a while for you to get it on your device. We’re not even sure if it’s rolling out in countries outside of the UK at the moment. If not, it will soon.
Sony also said that with Android 17, you can now use Desktop mode with an external display on supported Xperia models. The company also confirmed that customization options have expanded for the Quick settings panel, Lock screen, and Home screen.
Only one Sony exclusive feature was mentioned by the company
Android 17 is also making screen recording easier on the Xperia phones. Sony’s only exclusive feature seems to be ‘Custom looks’ on the Xperia 1 VIII. That works similarly to Google’s ‘Camera Looks’ on the Pixel 11 series. You can basically customize how the camera processes images in terms of color tones and other aspects. Sony allows you to set three presets.
It’s also worth noting that the Xperia 1 IX surfaced in the news yesterday, as Sony is seemingly aiming ot upgrade its main camera sensor after years of using the same one. That phone is not expected to arrive until mid-2027, though.
