Most modern smartphones undergo rigorous safety testing. However, rare hardware failures can still occur from time to time. A recent Reddit post from South Korea tells a scary story about a Galaxy flagship from a couple years ago. According to the report, a Samsung Galaxy S24 suddenly caught fire while being used for a task as simple as internet browsing.
Galaxy S24’s battery ignites in user’s hand during web browsing
Redditor chocho-789 claimed the incident took place on May 11, 2026. While in use, the phone reportedly began to swell rapidly and emit smoke followed by intense heat. The owner suffered minor burn blisters and received medical treatment for smoke inhalation and emotional distress following the event.
The phone was not plugged into a charger when it ignited, the user claims. Furthermore, they asserted that the device was never previously repaired, opened or struck. Local fire authorities responded to the scene and found signs consistent with a typical lithium battery ignition (via Android Authority).
Samsung’s response and investigation
Samsung has not yet issued a formal public statement. Still, the company appears to be taking the matter seriously. The user noted that a director from a local Samsung service center made contact after receiving instructions from the company’s headquarters. It is expected that Samsung will collect the device to conduct a thorough forensic investigation to determine the root cause of the failure.
Perspective for Galaxy users
While any report of a phone catching fire is concerning, experts suggest this remains an isolated incident. After all, millions of Galaxy S24 units have been sold worldwide without similar widespread reports. So, there is currently no evidence of a systemic defect in the lineup.
If you ever notice your handset becoming unusually hot or if the casing begins to bulge, it is vital to stop using it immediately. Safety protocols include placing the device on a non-flammable surface, not breathing any fumes, and calling professional support.
