School principals trying to keep AI chatbots out of their classrooms just ran into a major roadblock. Google announced that it plans to turn off AI features by default for K-12 student accounts next year, but doing that will completely disable Google Search too. Because the company built artificial intelligence straight into its search engine, schools have to choose between accepting AI tools or losing the web’s biggest research tool entirely.
Google Education Vice President Chris Phillips explained that Search and AI are now deeply integrated across student accounts. To help calm cheating concerns, Google is introducing a Guided Learning mode designed to walk students through homework problems step by step rather than spitting out instant answers. The company told The New York Times that school administrators will get options to test these study prompts before the official changes roll out.
Tough choices and major district bans
This new policy arrives right as major school districts across the country try to pull back on AI in the classroom. School systems in New York City and Los Angeles recently restricted generative AI on student devices to protect critical thinking skills and prevent easy cheating. Former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan slammed the update. She argued that Google is using its search monopoly to bully schools into adopting unwanted AI software.
Local political leaders are also pushing back hard against Google’s all-or-nothing approach. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted on social media that no private corporation should dictate how public schools educate local kids. Meanwhile, parent groups calling for a pause on classroom tech argue that ruining basic web search makes teaching proper research habits almost impossible.
Big tech dominance and future search options
Google holds a massive footprint in public education thanks to cheap Chromebooks and widespread Google Workspace tools. Cutting off Search leaves school boards in a tough spot, since switching to alternative research tools takes serious time and effort. Education experts warn that forcing 100% adoption of embedded AI features will only drive more frustration among parents and teachers.
Google plans to give school leaders two distinct search options when the full rollout lands in early 2027. School districts can either enable standard search with full AI Overviews turned on or stick with the step-by-step Guided Learning mode. School boards across the country will spend the coming months deciding whether to embrace Google’s AI vision or give up Google Search for good.
