Keeping massive data centers running while building out energy-hungry AI projects takes some serious financial gymnastics. Google parent Alphabet is heading back to the municipal bond market with a fresh $1.5 billion prepaid energy deal. This financial move marks the company’s second major effort to help secure discounted electricity for local power providers across California.
Bond documents filed with local regulators show Alphabet listed as the funding partner in a sale organized by the California Community Choice Financing Authority (shared by Bloomberg). Investment firm Goldman Sachs is setting up the deal, serving as the lead middleman between public investors and local power providers. Through this arrangement, Alphabet receives upfront cash from the bond sale while making scheduled payments over time to keep electricity flowing smoothly.
Municipal energy bonds and California power delivery
The discounted power secured through the bond deal will go straight to Central Coast Community Energy, a public utility powering coastal towns from Santa Cruz down to Santa Barbara. The utility plans to deliver the incoming power directly to local homes and small businesses in the region. Bloomberg data shows that prepaid energy deals are having a massive year, with total bond sales topping $36.5 billion so far.
Big Wall Street banks usually handle these types of prepaid energy deals, making Alphabet the first major tech company to jump into the space. Alphabet first tested this bond structure back in June, drawing plenty of interest from public market investors.
Tech companies are constantly hunting for clever financial setups to lock in clean electricity as computing demands keep soaring. Tapping into municipal energy bonds gives public utilities a way to buy cheaper power while giving corporate partners a steady path to support regional power grids. This setup shows how tech giants can help fund local clean energy projects without relying solely on traditional power purchase contracts.
