Google seems to be working on making calls through Android Auto more convenient, with a new feature that could let you choose a default phone number for contacts with multiple numbers. Additionally, the company is also testing a redesigned dial pad with Material 3 Expressive design. It looks like both the calling experience and the interface will soon get some welcome improvements.
Android Auto could let you choose a default number for contacts with multiple numbers
Currently, when you select a contact in Android Auto, it brings up a list of saved numbers, even when they’re saved as a favorite. Gemini asks you to explicitly specify which number to call. While this can be useful in avoiding wrong numbers, it’s a chore when you always call the same number. Well, things could soon get better.
Folks at Android Authority have discovered new strings in Android Auto version 18.1.164344-release.daily that suggest that Android Auto users could save a default phone number for contacts with multiple numbers saved. The latest strings mention a new “Remember this choice” option. This could potentially allow Android Auto to skip the selection screen on subsequent calls.
There’s also another message that reads, “Default set to %1$s. Click on contact to change.” The placeholder in this would display the chosen phone number. The message itself suggests users get to change their preference by selecting the contact again.
Material 3 Expressive redesign
As for the Phone app’s design change, it’s reportedly getting a Material 3 Expressive makeover. The updated design features larger, rounded buttons with distinct backgrounds. That said, it’s not clear when these changes will be available, as they’re still in development.
Besides these, Google is also reportedly working on other changes. Following on from the earlier developments of Google’s upcoming Cielo redesign, the report has spotted new animation files covering sliding, fading, and scaling effects for the dashboard and launcher.
