A new bug in Android Auto is reportedly blocking calls on clamshell foldable phones. As per the report, outgoing calls don’t work on the Motorola Razr and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip models. However, incoming calls continue to work as intended. Google and Motorola have begun investigating the issue, but there’s no fix in sight yet.
Android Auto users report a new bug that blocks outgoing calls
Foldable phones are meant to be useful even when closed. Owners can normally check notifications, run apps, take selfies, or make calls from the outer screen. Calling from Android Auto should work the same way. However, on clamshell foldable phones, the calling function doesn’t work properly.
Users have said that when they try to place an outgoing call from the foldable phone when it’s closed, Gemini says the call has been placed, but nothing happens. However, opening the phone allows the outgoing call to go through. Moreover, reports confirm that the problem affects both Motorola Razr and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip devices. This basically means the bug is not limited to one model or brand.
Google and Motorola begin investigation into the issue
Google and Motorola are both investigating the issue. Multiple users have shared their concerns on the online forum. Some have specifically mentioned that the issue started appearing only after Gemini replaced Google Assistant. The following point is common across reports. However, neither company has confirmed whether the assistant change is the root cause.
As said earlier, there’s no possible fix in sight. The tech giants are expected to release a patch as soon as they figure out the root cause of the issue. However, the timeline remains uncertain. Until then, affected users are advised to make outgoing calls only when the phone remains unfolded. It may sound awkward, but they can also keep the phone unfolded throughout the journey to get the hands-free experience.
