While some reportedly think that Xbox is being prepped for a sale sometime in the future, Xbox’s CEO Asha Sharma is staunchly disputing those opinions and has said that Xbox is, in fact, not for sale, and that the company remains committed to making bringing the Xbox brand back to form.
This whole past year since Asha Sharma took over, and Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond left the company, the Xbox division at Microsoft has had a huge restructuring that has included closing down multiple studios and laying off workers, reversing the decision to put Call of Duty on Xbox Game Pass, and even bringing the game franchise to Nintendo Switch 2, starting with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23.
Most recently, the restructuring has led to Halo Studios being shut down, with a small number of employees remaining with the company under the Halo IP’s new leadership at Activision. But as reports have mentioned, this is believed to be part of the setup for Xbox being sold or spun off.
Analysts predict that Xbox is going to be for sale in the future
Sharma has said in a recent interview with The New York Times that the Xbox brand isn’t for sale, but that hasn’t changed the prediction of some analysts, who think Microsoft is getting things ready for an eventual divestiture of the brand. Sharma is nothing if not persistent though. In the interview, she stated that “We will do whatever it takes to set the company up for success, and we will look at the right partnerships, the right operating model and everything needed to achieve that.”
This attitude toward the brand is how Sharma has been approaching the situation since the beginning, even if doing whatever it takes has included shutting down studios and cancelling games.
