Streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music know that it cannot rely on just music alone to sustain them. This is because podcasts are rising in popularity, where instead of music, people might prefer popping on a podcast during their drive or workouts. So if you’re a YouTube Music user, YouTube has rolled out a new podcast discovery feature that might be useful.
YouTube Music gets new podcast discovery tools
According to a post on the YouTube blog, the company calls it “your podcast lineup.” It’s an AI-generated audio guide that sits on the podcast page of the YouTube Music app. Once a week, it reads you a short rundown of shows it thinks you’ll enjoy. It also explains why each pick fits your taste.
Then when it’s done talking, it goes straight into the suggested episodes. YouTube says you won’t need to look at your screen or tap anything while it plays. This could be a useful feature if you’re looking to discover new podcasts to listen to. YouTube also gave Ask Music, its AI chat tool, a couple of new tricks. You can now use it to change up your queue or learn more about an artist. According to YouTube, both updates are coming soon worldwide, but it hasn’t shared a date.
How much does it cost?
That being said, this feature isn’t going to be available for everyone. YouTube says it’s only for people who pay for YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium. For context, in the US, YouTube Music Premium costs $11.99 a month. The family plan is $18.99. YouTube Premium costs $15.99 a month, while its family plan sits at $26.99.
So which is the right plan for you? Music Premium only works inside the YouTube Music app. Your songs play without ads, and you can download them. Regular YouTube videos still show ads, though. YouTube Premium includes everything from Music Premium. It also gets rid of ads from the main YouTube app.
If you watch YouTube every day, paying an extra $4 a month might make more sense. Plus you also get access to YouTube Music. However, if you mostly care about songs and podcasts, the cheaper plan does the job.
