If you can recall, Samsung earlier this year announced that it’ll drop OneDrive cloud sync support for image and video storage. The company gave a deadline of September 30 for the partnership. Well, now that we’re in September, preparations for removing the integration have reportedly started. Not just that, it seems Samsung Gallery has found a partner that’ll replace OneDrive; it’s Google’s cloud for storage.
Samsung Gallery could move from OneDrive to Google Cloud
This development was spotted by X user Sandeep Adap. A new version of Samsung’s Gallery Cloud Sync service is now available on the Galaxy Store. Its description says the service will back up photos and videos to Google Cloud. While that’s a big shift in Samsung’s preferences, it’ll not make much of a difference for users.
Once the change takes effect, photos and videos will be backed up to Google’s cloud instead of Microsoft’s. For what it’s worth, ahead of the September 30 deadline, the option to sync photos to OneDrive has already started disappearing from Samsung Gallery.Â
No confirmation from Samsung yet
After the deadline, photos stored on OneDrive will no longer be accessible through Gallery. However, you can still retrieve them directly through the OneDrive app. You can also continue backing up your images in OneDrive if you want. You’ll just need to set that up through the OneDrive app.
Google’s new support documentation says photos uploaded from the Samsung Gallery app to Google’s cloud will also appear in Google Photos. This could make accessing your photos easier. That said, there’s no official confirmation from Samsung about the change at the moment. But we will share an update when there’s an announcement in this regard.
Hopefully, users will get an easy way to move their existing photos from Microsoft’s cloud to Google’s cloud to continue accessing their existing images through Samsung Gallery.Â
