Meta is rolling out another update to their smart glasses that will take its efforts to ban sneaky recording to another level. Meta’s VP of AR, Alex Himel, posted on Threads that the update will cause the camera to stop recording if you block the light at any time during recording.
Apparently, some people start a recording and then block the LED light so people can’t see that you’re recording. Currently, the glasses only check whether the light is blocked before recording starts, not while recording. So this is a much-needed update to help get rid of those creeps.
Himel also noted that “we’re going to keep rolling out updates like this to make sure the capture LED can reliably alert bystanders when photos or videos are being captured for someone’s gallery.”
This is important because Meta has already rolled out a few updates for its glasses to target this issue. This includes a more recent update that will brick your glasses if you’ve modded the capture LED in any way. But that has a new workaround too, so Meta needs to go back to the drawing board there.
Meta Glasses’ popularity could be their downfall
Meta’s smart glasses have been insanely popular since their launch five years ago. A major reason for this is that Meta partnered with two very popular eyeglass frame brands: Ray-Ban and, later, Oakley. Now, Meta has launched their own glasses without the Ray-Ban or Oakley branding, and they’re even cheaper. Making them more accessible.
However, because of how popular they’ve gotten, a lot of people are using these to be creeps. Recording people without their knowledge, recording kids, and much worse. It really ruins it for the rest of us who use Meta Glasses to get cool POV videos or use the speakers to listen to podcasts and such.
