Samsung’s latest move is likely to help reduce costs in the wake of the memory crisis. Samsung has apparently added more camera suppliers for the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
For the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Powerlogics, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and Sunny Optical will supply the 50MP primary camera and 12MP ultrawide, while the 10MP front-facing camera will be supplied by Camsys and MCNEX.
When it comes to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, all of the cameras will be supplied by Camsys, MCNEX, Namuga, and Powerlogics. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to have two 10MP front-facing cameras, a 50MP primary rear camera, and a 50MP ultrawide camera. While the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to use a 200MP primary camera, a 50MP ultrawide, a 10MP telephoto, and two 10MP front-facing cameras.
This is something that Samsung will likely never disclose publicly; they’ve never really disclosed who their suppliers are for various components in the past.
The Android Headlines Take
This is another move by Samsung to help lower costs while memory costs are skyrocketing. Just last week, Apple announced huge price increases for virtually all of its products. Samsung has quietly raised prices on some of its products (mostly the non-base storage models), and we’re expecting prices to go up next month during Unpacked.
Adding in more camera suppliers will help alleviate any bottlenecks in manufacturing and also force them to compete for Samsung’s business, driving costs lower. We have also heard that Samsung is preparing to use BOE to supply the display for the Galaxy S27 next year, as a way to lower costs as well. So this move for the camera modules is not an outlier.
This is all so that Samsung can position itself to better compete with the iPhone Ultra this Fall. Apple’s first foldable is launching in September, with many analysts expecting it to cost between $2,000 and $2,500. Of course, Samsung wants to come in at a lower price, and potentially steal some of Apple’s customers. But the rising costs of DRAM and NAND flash are not helping.
