The next time you want to walk into a T-Mobile store for whatever reason, you might need to walk a little further. This is because according to a post on the T-Mobile subreddit, it seems that a number of third-party authorized T-Mobile retailers will be shutting down this coming July.
Third-party T-Mobile stores shutting down in July
This isn’t the first time T-Mobile has shuttered some of its stores. We’ve seen instances of this dating back as far as 2023. This is why this post doesn’t really come as a surprise, especially with the carrier being rather aggressive with its T-Life app.
For those unfamiliar, the T-Life app is T-Mobile’s way of letting customers serve themselves. In the past, if you had technical issues or wanted to purchase a new phone or new line, you could walk into a T-Mobile store and speak to someone there. This is ideal for people who’d rather not do it themselves or older folks who aren’t so tech-savvy.
With T-Life, T-Mobile is hoping that customers will figure this out themselves. In fact, when the app first launched, T-Mobile tried to push it aggressively. They forced salespeople in stores to recommend customers to download the app, and these sales reps would be penalized if a customer did not install the app.
It’s also a very transparent and obvious cost-cutting measure. Fewer stores and fewer salespeople mean less rent and salary that needs to be paid. Especially if the T-Life app can replace the jobs of current sales reps.
Not leaving them out to dry
That being said, it’s not as if T-Mobile is leaving its dealers hung out to dry. According to the report, one dealer is closing more than 100 locations in the coming months. However, it seems that they were given some financial incentives from T-Mobile to do so. The people that are affected are the employees at these stores, who might now need to look for new work.
Also, keep in mind that T-Mobile isn’t closing all its stores. A lot of its corporate-owned stores are still up and running. This is why, like we said, if you do need to visit a store in person, you might need to go a bit further to find one owned by T-Mobile, not a third-party. Depending on where you live, this might be a bit of an inconvenience.
