Rumors from earlier this year claimed that brands like OPPO and Huawei are testing a 1:1 square selfie sensor for their upcoming flagships. Another rumor in recent times pointed out that OPPO will use a 100MP sensor. Now, we have some updates in this regard, courtesy of tipster Digital Chat Station. It seems OPPO Find X10 and HONOR Magic 9 series are testing a 100MP square selfie sensor.
OPPO is reportedly testing a 100MP square selfie sensor for the Find X10 series
According to Digital Chat Station, OPPO is testing a new 100MP 1:1 square format selfie camera for the Find X10 series. It’ll apparently use a Samsung-developed sensor. It could measure 1/2.5-inch in size. He adds that this tech is in testing for a future device using a 2nm iteration line, possibly referring to the MediaTek Dimensity 9600. The chip will debut later this year.
The leak signals that OPPO is prioritizing the front camera game along with the rear setup for the upcoming Find X10 series. This should make the lineup a notable upgrade over the Find X9 series from last year and also quite appealing.
HONOR may also be joining the race
Digital Chat Station also claims that HONOR is testing a 100MP front-facing camera for its upcoming flagship, the Magic 9. Although the leak doesn’t explicitly mention any names, fingers on the web point towards HONOR. The series is reportedly being tested with the OVA0B, which measures 1/1.8-inch and could be cropped into a 1:1 square format.
In addition to revealing the front camera details, the tipster also shed light on the rear camera setup. The Magic 9 may feature a 200MP primary camera and a 64MP periscope telephoto lens. It seems the company is reportedly testing multiple 200MP sensors for the main camera. One with a 1/1.28-inch OV52A/OV52B and the other with OVB0D 200MP 1/1.12-inch main sensor.
Are square selfie cameras the next big trend?
Unlike regular front cameras that are usually tuned for vertical selfies, a square 1:1 selfie camera uses a square-shaped sensor to capture a wider frame that allows for flexible cropping. Users can capture selfies in both portrait and landscape orientations without needing to rotate the phone. Apple took a similar approach with its iPhone 17 last year, but with a lower resolution.
If this pans out, the Find X10/Magic 9 series could be the first batch of Android phones to feature this.
