It’s not uncommon to associate Huawei with cameras, considering the company always pushes the envelope with unique innovations. Huawei also aggressively promotes the flagships, including foldables, for their durable designs. While performance is more than acceptable, it sits slightly behind in the competition race. However, the company seems to be gearing up for a notable chip upgrade for the upcoming Huawei Mate 90 series.
Huawei Mate 90 series will reportedly feature a new chip, possibly called Kirin 9050 Pro
At the recent 20th Shezhen International Financial Expo in China, a Huawei executive, Zheng Jun, reportedly revealed new details about the brand’s new chip development efforts. It seems there were hints at a flagship processor that may deliver performance close to the current 3nm mobile chips. For context, rivals like Qualcomm and MediaTek will be transitioning to 2nm chips later this year.
As per the details shared during the event, Huawei’s new chip platform is reportedly based on the “Tau” design principle. Zheng Jun, CTO of Huawei’s financial system division, says that the idea goes beyond just manufacturing and involves a broader redesign of chip engineering and supply chain coordination.
The new chip may deliver performance close to 3nm-class levels
Interestingly, Huawei has reportedly said that the new chipset already powers the Mate 90 lineup. It apparently can offer near-3nm-class performance, which seems like progress considering where Huawei stands currently. While the executive hasn’t given out a name, recent reports note it may debut commercially as the ‘Kirin 9050 Pro’.
The new chip will reportedly feature a logic stacking architectural design, where key logic circuits are layered vertically instead of relying on a smaller geometric scaling. The approach reportedly allows Huawei to improve transistor density by 53.5%, reaching around 238 million transistors per square millimeter. Huawei apparently improved power efficiency on performance cores by 41% while increasing peak clock speeds by 12.7%.
As for the Huawei Mate 90 series, the lineup may debut in September. It may bring flagship-grade performance, going by the leaks, and a bunch of new AI features.
