Apple is reportedly working on a new anti-snatching security feature for the iPhone. In simple terms, it’ll automatically lock the iPhone when it detects someone has snatched it. For some context, Apple already has several security features, like Find My, Lost Mode, Activation Lock, and Stolen Device Protection. However, they don’t nearly serve the purpose if a thief snatches the iPhone while it remains unlocked.
Apple might soon add a new anti-snatching feature to the iPhone
While Apple has yet to officially confirm the new anti-snatching iPhone feature, 9to5Mac has spotted references in iOS code. This signals that it’s under active development. Apple does offer time-based security delays to prevent Apple ID changes, but a thief with an unlocked iPhone can still do a lot of damage.Â
This could be why Apple is working on a new feature that can automatically lock the iPhone when it detects someone has snatched it from the user’s hand. This is similar to Android’s Theft Detection Lock.
The feature restricts Apple Account changes.
The report says that these systems will rely on several signals, like the iPhone’s accelerometer, to detect when someone snatches the device. Once it confirms, it will automatically lock the iPhone. The feature will also check how far the iPhone is from its paired Apple Watch to determine whether someone has taken it from its owner.
Additionally, the feature will also look for some signals that apply to Stolen Device Protection. These include whether the iPhone is connected to a familiar Wi-Fi network and if it is at a familiar location. If these conditions also indicate that someone has snatched the iPhone, the feature restricts biometric and Apple Account changes.
Currently, it’s not clear when this new iOS feature will be out, but 9to5Mac expects it to go official soon. We’ll update when that happens.
