Apple has been trying to challenge the App Store injunction placed on it by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez since the injunction was ordered, and it’s giving it one last ditch effort before it likely has no more recourse. Apple and Epic Games, much like Google and Epic Games, have been battling each other in court for years about the App Store. Specifically around the fees that Apple has collected from developers over the years.
While Apple did eventually largely win its case against Epic, there was one small caveat that was more of a win for Epic. That’s the fact that Apple was required to be more lenient about the idea of developers linking to outside payment options. Apple did allow this, but not before putting in a rule that charged fees on outside linking. These fees, while lower, still ended up not being worth it for most developers after the fees from payment processors were stacked on top. This is about the time that Epic went back to Judge Gonzalez and said Apple was violating the injunction. This has all led to the current status, where Apple was ordered in 2025 not to collect any fees at all for outside links. Apple has complied but has been trying to fight this injunction any way possible.
Apple is likely just delaying the inevitable with the challenge to the App Store injunction
It seems bound to happen at some point. Apple is giving it the old college try in terms of fight this injunction, but its efforts will probably be for nothing in the end. According to a report from MacRumors, Epic’s Director of Corporate Communications, Natalie Munoz, has said that this challenge to the injunction is “one last hail mary” to delay the conclusion to the case. Munoz continued by stating that this change is a benefit to the consumer. Which, is not wrong. Consumers can and likely will benefit from this. As developers not being charged a fee by Apple if they link to outside payment options, could allow them to charge less money for in-app purchases.
