Ever since the iPhone 14 launched, pretty much every iPhone model after that has satellite connectivity as an option for emergency purposes. However, the satellite feature could be upgraded in the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro.
iPhone 18 Pro could feature better satellite support
According to the latest rumors, the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to come with the C2 modem. But why is that important? If the rumors are accurate, the C2 modem will offer support for 5G NR-NTN. This basically means that it integrates satellite connectivity in the iPhone 18 Pro alongside 5G cellular.
One of the main benefits is that with this tech, users don’t need to point their iPhones at satellites anymore. In case you’ve never used the iPhone’s satellite feature, you basically need a clear line of sight to the sky. Users will then be guided to align their phone with a passing satellite.
This is hardly convenient, but then again, the point of the satellite feature is for emergency purposes. It’s meant to be used in instances where you do not have a cellular connection. Through the satellite connection, you can send messages and your location, which is helpful for emergency services to locate you.
However, with the use of 5G NR-NTN, you don’t have to point your phone at the sky anymore. Instead, the connection will automatically switch to satellite if cell coverage is poor. It can even work when your phone is in your bag or pocket or if you’re indoors.
Now, we know that satellite connectivity isn’t exactly a must-have feature. However, it is a useful feature, especially in emergency situations. So while it might not be the most exciting, it is genuinely useful.
When is the phone coming?
At the moment, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are rumored for a launch this September. The phones will debut alongside the iPhone Ultra, Apple’s first-ever foldable. However, unlike previous years, we won’t see the base iPhone 18 this year. Instead, the rumors claim Apple will push it to 2027. That’s when the phone will most likely debut alongside the iPhone 18e, possibly in the early part of the year.
