Back during its initial launch, it felt like the Google Pixel 9 was on fire with its rush of popularity among Google and Pixel fans. The Pixel phones have never really broken records in terms of sales numbers when compared to other flagship devices, but they were always pretty popular. They also got increasingly popular with each new release, hence the feeling of the phone being on fire. It’s just, no one expected the phone to actually catch fire.
This wouldn’t be the first time that a phone has caught fire in some way or another, and not even really the first Pixel phone. The Pixel 6a has had issues with its battery that resulted in fires back in July of 2025. Still, you probably don’t expect a phone you just bought to catch fire inside your pocket.
Google Pixel 9 catches fire in user’s pocket, Google has yet to respond
If you own a Pixel 9, then this might be a thread you want to keep your eyes on. Even if the chance is small. There’s always a chance that this issue could go beyond a single user-reported problem. According to user u/Kindly-Celery9201 on Reddit, their Pixel 9 caught fire in their pocket while they were using their iPad to Face Time a friend. They noticed smoke coming from their pocket and took the phone out. Only to realize that the case was already melting onto the phone.
The user says they have reached out to Google about the issue but has so far not heard back. They go on to note that it’s been four days since then. Which might make this a little bit more alarming. The user has attached photos to an official Google Help forum post, and there’s a screen recording that was taken as well.
It’s still unclear what Google will end up doing with this issue. Google hasn’t officially responded with info about the combustion or what steps will be taken to rectify the problem. It’s also unclear if other Pixel 9 phones could face the same fate. As reported by Phone Arena, it doesn’t look like Google will have a resolution for the user by the time they leave the country.
