After rolling out to the initial batch of devices last week, Samsung is now pushing the stable One UI 8.5 (based on Android 16 QPR2) update to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 foldables. This long-awaited update covers a lot of ground, with a refreshed user interface, new customization options, enhanced AI capabilities, and a host of other new features.
Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are receiving the stable One UI 8.5 update
As is the case most of the time, the stable One UI 8.5 update is initially rolling out in the company’s home country, South Korea. Although Samsung hasn’t said anything, it shouldn’t be too long before the update expands to more regions. The update carries the firmware versions F946NKSU6GZDT and F731NKSU6GZDU for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5, respectively.Â
As a refresher, the One UI 8.5 rollout kicked off on May 11th. You can check for the update on your Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 manually by heading to Settings > Software update > Download and install. Since it’s a major update, it’s best to connect to a stable Wi-Fi connection and ensure the devices have at least 30% battery.
What’s new in One UI 8.5?
One UI 8.5 is more than just a regular update, though it’s not based on the latest Android 17 OS. The biggest inclusion is the AirDrop support in Quick Share. This allows sharing files wirelessly with Apple devices. For those into customization, Quick Panel is now more customizable than ever. It lets you add/remove any shortcut, resize toggles, and change the layout of the display brightness and volume sliders.Â
One UI 8.5 also brings an upgraded Bixby experience. It can now understand complex, natural language queries, quickly surface relevant device settings or information, and more. The update also brings home and lock screen customizations. It brings new interactive wallpapers that can be downloaded from the Wallpapers menu. One UI 8.5 introduces partial screen recording, where you can now select the exact area you want to capture. This saves time from cropping the video later.
There’s a new Storage Share feature that lets you browse files across all your Samsung devices. The document scanner in the Camera app is now more powerful. It now lets you scan multiple pages and allows you to save documents as either JPEGs or PDFs. It can even automatically remove fingers, shadows, and more.
