Google just dropped a pretty massive update for Android Auto, and honestly, it’s been a long time coming. The company announced a full refresh of the platform that touches just about everything – design, entertainment, navigation, and AI. And it’s not just Android Auto getting attention here. Cars with Google built in are also pulling in a bunch of these upgrades.
Android Auto is finally getting Material 3 Expressive, which means your dashboard will pick up the same expressive fonts, smooth animations, and wallpapers you’ve been using on your phone. There’s also a new widget system that’s genuinely useful. You can throw a shortcut to your favorite contacts, a one-tap garage door opener, or a weather glance right on the screen. And it all scales to whatever weird shape your car screen happens to be, whether that’s ultrawide, a circle, or something in between.
The bigger story is Immersive Navigation in Google Maps. Google is calling this its biggest Maps update in over a decade, and the 3D view with buildings, overpasses, and terrain is the kind of thing that should make tricky highway exits a lot less stressful. Lanes, traffic lights, and stop signs all get highlighted, too.
Movies, music, and a Gemini that actually does things
Here’s the headline a lot of folks will care about: Android Auto is finally getting video. You’ll be able to watch YouTube in full HD 60fps when you’re parked or charging. It’s launching later this year in supported cars from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. When you put the car in drive, the video transitions to audio-only so you can keep listening to whatever podcast you had on. Dolby Atmos is coming too on a similar list of brands.
Gemini is also expanding on Android Auto, and if your phone has Gemini Intelligence, you’ll be able to use it in the car later this year. Magic Cue can pull addresses from your texts or calendar and send a reply in a single tap. You can even order DoorDash from the road, which sounds either incredibly convenient or incredibly chaotic, depending on how you feel about driving and dinner at the same time.
Cars with Google built-in are getting their own perks, including a deeper Gemini integration that can identify mystery dashboard warning lights, plus live lane guidance powered by the car’s front-facing camera. Zoom is also coming this year for in-car meetings, which feels very 2026.
It’s a lot, and most of it should land throughout the year. Hopefully, the Gemini bugs get sorted out before the bigger rollout hits.
