A growing number of users are reporting a strange bug linked to YouTube that abnormally spikes RAM usage and causes the browser to glitch. The issue is reportedly affecting several major browsers. While the exact cause remains unknown, early findings suggest the flaw emerges from the YouTube webpage’s interface.
YouTube bug causes abnormal RAM usage and browser crash
Several users, including those of Edge, Brave, and Firefox, have been reporting a similar problem since last week. Most users have reported that, while playing a video on YouTube, the media starts stuttering, tabs stop responding, and the overall browser feels slow and glitchy. Some reports also mention that the YouTube tab alone was consuming more than 7GB of RAM, which is weird and far beyond normal usage for video streaming.
Initially, users tied the issue to recent browser updates. Some also said that the issue may be due to ad blocker plugins. However, since more reports are emerging, and that too from different browser users, the attention has shifted towards YouTube itself. Mozilla developers, while reviewing bug reports, aimed at YouTube’s interface as a possible reason for the issue.
The YouTube website’s interface is causing endless loops
Developers have suspected that the row of buttons below the video player, including Like, Dislike, and Share, is the main reason. For reference, this section automatically adjusts to match the screen size and available space. If there isn’t enough space, one of the buttons hides itself to fit the layout.
The issue starts because hiding a button changes the available space. Once that happens, the system thinks there is room again and brings the button back. This creates a rapid loop. Basically, the buttons keep disappearing and reappearing. This happens so fast that it is almost impossible to notice it visually. These repeated calculations are known as layout thrashing, and it puts heavy pressure on the CPU and storage.
Regardless, do keep in mind that YouTube is still the suspected cause only. Mozilla developers are yet to fully analyze the issue and pinpoint the exact cause of the problem. Google or YouTube has also not commented on the situation yet.
