The Pixel 11 series phones were suspected to come with a feature that would resemble the Face ID feature on the iPhone series, but it turns out that the Pixel 11 may not be the device series to introduce this feature to Android.
Internally, the feature is called Project Toscana, and details about Google’s efforts to introduce a face unlock technology that functioned as accurately and quickly as Apple’s Face ID first popped up back in February of 2026. At the time, it was suspected that the Pixel 11 would be the phone to initially come with this feature. When it was discovered earlier this year, Project Toscana was reportedly being tested on Pixel phones and on Chromebooks with UX testers. So it was reasonable to assume that Google might actually be close to getting this ready for its next flagship phone launch in the second half of the year. It seems like that might not be the case.
The Face ID-like Project Toscana feature may not launch with the Pixel 11 series after all
Google hasn’t confirmed Project Toscana’s existence so it’s entirely possible that this feature isn’t anywhere near completion. It’s also possible that Google plans to launch it with the Pixel 11 when the series is released later this year.
That being said, a new leak from MysticLeaks on Telegram (via Android Authority), suggests that the feature isn’t ready yet. The leak also suggests that it won’t be ready in time for the Pixel 11 launch. That could mean that users won’t see the feature until the next major Pixel release. It’s worth keeping in mind as well, that Google could have the hardware in the Pixel 11 at launch for this feature, and simply push the feature at a later date. Either way, whether the devices are capable of utilizing this feature or they simply won’t have the hardware to support it, if the leak is accurate then users won’t see Project Toscana available at launch of the new phones.
