Anyone who uses YouTube, and that’s everyone, knows that it allows users to watch videos in multiple resolutions. It goes all the way up to 4K on a compatible device. Even in regular scenarios, most users usually consume content in 1080p. However, some users are now seeing fewer resolution choices.Â
According to several Reddit reports, some users can now only watch YouTube videos at up to 480p. In case you’re wondering whether YouTube is locking higher resolutions behind the YouTube Premium paywall, that’s not the case. Premium users are also affected. Interestingly, this seems to be an issue for some time, as reports go back as far as a month.
It’s not clear what’s causing this
It’s unclear what’s causing the problem, but it appears to affect only the YouTube mobile app. One user claims they were able to get higher resolutions back by clearing the app’s cache. Another user notes they could solve the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling the app. But this seems to be a temporary fix. Other users claim that neither workaround works for them.
Considering there’s no clear workaround to bring back higher resolutions permanently, the only way out at this point seems to be waiting for Google to fix this on their end. The company hasn’t acknowledged the issue yet. We hope there’s a fix to this soon.
