CES is the home of all kinds of weird inventions and cool upcoming products, and the 8BitDo FlipPad controller is in the latter category with its launch beginning the week of August 14. 8BitDo first showed off this controller way back in January at CES 2026, and like many of the company’s mobile gaming controllers, the FlipPad has a retro look and is designed with retro games in mind.
Both actual retro games you can play via emulator apps on Android and retro-style Android games. Though, as a mobile controller you can really use it with any Android game that has support for gamepads, it doesn’t need to be retro.
The FlipPad features a design that was inspired by Nintendo’s Game Boy, even coming with the same color scheme. Like its namesake implies, the FlipPad has the buttons on a piece that flips up over the bottom part of your phone. It has several buttons available, including a d-pad, ABXY buttons, L1, L2, R1, and R2 buttons, and even start and select as well as a couple others.

8BitDo’s controllers are always pretty inexpensive compared to other options, the FlipPad is continuing this trend, and is available to buy right now from Amazon for just $29.99. Its small size and small price tag make it an easy pickup for gamers that need/want something portable that won’t break the bank.
The controller uses a USB-Type C connection and it’s compatible with iOS and Android devices. The fact that its plug and play also means there’s no internal battery to charge. 8BitDo says you can flip the controller open for taking messages or calls mid-game without having to unplug the controller, and the hinge is rated for 6,000 open and close cycles.
