We often lament when phones from Chinese OEMs don’t make it stateside. This is because more often than not, Chinese phone makers like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo come up with some truly innovative devices that we would like to check out for ourselves. Thankfully for these companies, the China and Asian markets are usually big enough for them to survive. Unfortunately, the ongoing rising costs of hardware components have forced Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo to cut their 2026 smartphone targets.
Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo cut 2026 smartphone targets
We’re not talking about small cuts here either. According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo have cut their 2026 smartphone targets by as much as 30%. That’s actually quite a dramatic cut.Â
We know that sometimes demand can fluctuate. There are many reasons for this. For example, a phone launching with a brand new design and drastic hardware improvements might see higher demand than an iterative refresh. Then there are economic situations that can affect demand too.
But in this case, it seems that the smartphone shipment adjustments were made due to shortage of components and rising prices. This includes memory like storage and RAM, as well as PCBs and other supporting components. This means that these companies have a harder time trying to plan for production.
It is speculated that if the supply situation doesn’t improve, we could see delayed launches. Worse still, we could see lower production volumes, which means phones might be harder to get at launch.
Not everyone might be affected
That being said, not all companies might be affected by this. We imagine that companies like Apple and Samsung probably have their supply chain already sorted out. One of the advantages of these massive companies is their negotiating power. They are able to lock in supply for years to come at favorable prices.
This doesn’t mean they get to hold out forever. However, at least for the more immediate future, some brands might be safer than others. In the meantime, there might be good news on the memory front. There are some who predict that Chinese memory makers could flood the market with their own hardware. This could potentially ease memory shortages and bring prices back down as soon as 2027.
