The business models for Xbox haven’t exactly been industry-leading the last couple of generations, but the new Xbox CEO, Asha Sharma, aims to change that. A big part of this shift is an attempt to bring Xbox back to its glory days. Switching up business models is merely one part of this overall strategy, but Sharma believes it’s needed.
Speaking with Fortune this week, Sharma reportedly said that “We must think about other ways to think about the cost construction of a console. We must think about how we create different plans, so more people can participate in the console.” She continued, saying “We must think about partnerships that will allow us to have better distribution and reach.”
Sharma doesn’t explicitly mention details about what the team may be considering. However, it echoes sentiments she made earlier this month when she talked about the memory crisis raising costs. Other parts of the plan to bring Xbox back to form include more exclusive games.
Xbox console business models for Project Helix will be “affordable and flexible”
There’s no doubt that the memory crisis is at the heart of higher prices for lots of consumer electronics. Unfortunately that also includes unreleased products like the PS6 and the new Xbox. However, Xbox is trying to tackle this issue and make sure that the next console is still affordable to a large number of fans.
In an interview with the Game Business, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball said that the Xbox team is considering business models for Project Helix that are radically different. “We are very cognizant of the ways in which we need to change as a company to make sure it is affordable, to make sure that it’s flexible,” Ball said of Project Helix.
