After a slow initial start, Wi-Fi 7 adoption is finally taking off across the US. Latest data reveals more internet providers are rolling out Wi-Fi 7-powered routers, which has boosted the overall adoption rate. Moreover, decreasing hardware prices have encouraged more users to upgrade. The shift is also helping improve broadband speeds across the country.
ISPs lead the Wi-Fi 7 adoption in the US
As per Ookla’s latest Speedtest data, Wi-Fi 7 traffic in the US states has quadrupled between the first quarter of 2025 and the second quarter of 2026. The tech now accounts for a total of 7.2% of the Wi-Fi market share in the country. The figures are up from 1.8% a year earlier and less than 1% during 2024.
One of the biggest drivers of the growth is that ISPs are now including Wi-Fi 7 gateways with broadband plans. Moreover, routers from brands such as Tenda, TP-Link, and Asus have become much more affordable. To be more precise, cable companies are leading the rollout.
Charter’s Spectrum now accounts for 24.9% of all US Wi-Fi 7 Speedtest samples, making it the largest Wi-Fi 7 network in the world by sample volume. Comcast’s Xfinity comes in the second position with 12.4%. Fiber providers have also upgraded a larger share of their customers, with CenturyLink at 14.7% and Frontier at 14.3%. Both are well above the national average.
Median Wi-Fi 7 speed doubles across the country
In its report, Ookla says while fibre is leading Wi-Fi 7 adoption in the US, cable is driving overall scale because of its much larger customer base. As a result, Xfinity’s median Wi-Fi 7 upload speed also more than doubled year-on-year to 108.8 Mbps. That’s not all; the Ookla report also claims that the use of 6 GHz Wi-Fi traffic in the US grew 62% over the past year and now makes up 13.8% of all Wi-Fi Speedtest samples.
Median download speeds reached 316.3 Mbps in early 2026; that was up 76% since 2022. The median upload speeds, on the other hand, tripled to 68.3 Mbps. The improvements come as more homes switch to Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6E equipment.
