While standard phone makers are stuck in a boring race to push out bigger screens and more complex AI features, an upcoming pocketable Android device called the Clicks Communicator is doing something radical. It is bringing back the physical keyboard. To get it right, the company teamed up with Joseph Hofer, the legendary designer behind beloved classics like the BlackBerry Bold 9000, Q10, and Passport.
After leaving the phone industry for a decade when BlackBerry shut down, Hofer came back specifically for this project. But in an exclusive chat with PhoneArena, he made it clear that this isn’t about reliving the past or riding a cheap wave of tech nostalgia.
Clicks Communicator is built for typing, not for doomscrolling
Hofer argues that the phones in our pockets today have become “output machines.” They are designed to constantly bombard us until we end up lost at the bottom of a social media feed. The Clicks Communicator flips that setup entirely.
“It’s more of an input product than an output product,” said Joseph Hofer. The idea is that you pick up this device with intention—to type a message to a friend, coordinate with your team, or talk to an AI—rather than to blindly consume content. Its tiny 4.03-inch AMOLED screen technically runs apps like TikTok, but the compact size makes it a clunky experience on purpose. It even includes a physical kill switch to silence the phone instantly, trading notifications for pure focus.
Designing a brand-new legacy
If you expect Hofer to just reissue the classic BlackBerry keyboard layout, look closer. The Communicator ditches old oval or square keys for vertical pills, a custom shape that adds 30% more typing surface. Each key features a slightly raised inner corner to help your thumbs type quickly without looking down.
Hofer wants the device to stand completely on its own two feet as a fresh design language.
“I’m working backwards from a decade ahead and trying to create a legacy,” he said. “I worked really hard to learn from the past but not be the past.”
The hardware inside the $499 device
The specs under the hood are ready for the device’s scheduled Q4 2026 shipping window. Priced at $499 unlocked, the Communicator launches on Android 17 with updates guaranteed through Android 20. It packs a 4nm MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chip, a 4,450mAh battery, and 256GB of expandable storage. The spec sheet also includes a 50 MP main camera, Qi2 wireless charging, and yes, a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
With minimalist phone sales climbing 25% last year, the hunger for intentional tech is booming. Hofer is banking on the idea that users are simply tired of the overstuffed status quo.
“I don’t think people buy the best product. I think they buy the product they understand the best,” Hofer noted. Overall, he trusts that a clean, focused device is exactly what a lot of us are looking for.
