After teasing its username feature for a while, the popular messaging platform WhatsApp has finally started rolling it out for a limited number of users. The new feature gives users a new way to connect without sharing their mobile numbers. It works similarly to the username features of Telegram, Discord, or other social media platforms.

As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has finally begun releasing the username feature. The feature release currently covers select stable and beta users. The rollout is expected to expand gradually over the coming weeks. Eligible users will see a new banner on the home screen confirming the username feature on their mobile application. They may create their unique username and share it with new contacts instead of the phone number.
WhatsApp introduced username reservations last month. It lets users reserve their preferred available username before the wider release. Further, those who linked Meta Accounts Center could reserve the same username used on Facebook or Instagram, although this remains optional.
Wider release to begin in the coming weeks
Users can check the username feature by going to Settings >> Profile. If available, they can create, edit, or delete a username at any time from the same page. Also, unlike other platforms, the username remains a completely optional feature in WhatsApp. Users can either have only the phone number linked to the account, or both the number and the username. If a username is removed, phone numbers become the default identifier for new conversations again.
Moreover, WhatsApp will also display an in-chat system message whenever an existing contact creates or changes a username. This will help reduce confusion and avoid impersonation risks. Last but not least, Usernames do not replace phone numbers. A mobile number is still required to register and use WhatsApp, while existing chats continue to display phone numbers.
