Imagine you have your Pixel device and you pick it up to discover an email, so you open up Gmail and decide to reply only you can’t type out the reply yourself, and instead you’re forced to use Gmail’s “Help Me Write” feature that uses AI to help fill in what you want to say.
If this sounds like a weird scenario that borders on the dystopian, it’s actually happening to some Pixel owners. This strange bug is preventing these users from typing out responses of their own accord like you would normally do. This isn’t necessarily related to AI, and seems to be a bug with the Gmail app. So, that’s a silver lining if this is a bug you’ve experienced yourself. With that being the case, if this is a Gmail bug, then Google will likely be able to fix it quickly. Google is likely to fix it quickly too. Because it wouldn’t be that good of a look if it was forcing people to use its AI assistance feature to reply to emails.
The Gmail AI bug for Pixel users is likely more of a Gmail problem
If you’ve never used the Help Me Write feature before, it’s just like it sounds. It’s an AI-assisted feature that will basically write your replies for you. While this could be nice in theory, it can be annoying if you’re worried about mistakes being made. Especially if it feels like Google was forcing you to write emails this way. Thankfully, it’s reportedly a bug within Gmail, by the looks of it.
It’s also said to be limited to the Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, based on reports from users on Reddit, and from reporting at Android Authority. It’s also stated that it isn’t clear exactly where this bug is taking root. Google apparently hasn’t acknowledge the issue yet, and there currently isn’t a fix.
