The legendary Volkswagen CEO Ferdinand Piëch is better known for beloved oddballs like the Passat W8 and supercars like the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, but the automaker also took exotic design down a more parsimonious route with the limited-production VW XL1 from 2014 to 2016. Designed for efficiency above all else, the diesel-electric hybrid had a 0.189 coefficient of drag and achieved more than 100 miles per gallon. It looks as though the XL1 may get a spiritual successor, however.
