Verizon has announced the second annual Verizon Frontline App Developer Challenge. The idea here is for developers, engineers, and tech innovators across the US to come up with a “cutting-edge” mobile application that helps first responders and public safety agencies to operate “more safely, efficiently, and effectively.”
The Verizon Frontline challenge seeks app ideas to help first responders
The announcement came on National First Responders Day (October 28), and the challenge offers a $25,000 grand prize for the most impactful and innovative mobile app concept. It is seeking ideas that leverage mobile connectivity and advanced technologies to address critical operational challenges faced by first responders on the front lines.
To recall, the award-winning concept last year was the AI-powered drone intelligence app, Apex Eye, by Rian Karim. However, all three finalists from last year have further developed their solutions with the Verizon Frontline Innovation Program.
The competition has three phases
Coming back to this year’s challenge, the competition has three phases. It starts with the call for entries from October 28, 2026, to April 2, 2027. Developers nationwide can submit app concepts and proposals addressing public safety needs. Phase two is where a panel of public safety experts and technology leaders will evaluate the submissions and choose finalists.
The final phase is scheduled for the week of May 18, 2027. Three finalists will present their concepts to public safety leaders at the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, D.C. Here, the winner of the $25,000 grand prize will be announced.
Cory Davis, Verizon Frontline’s vice president, says it’s bringing back the challenge after seeing innovative ideas in the first year. He added that first responders need reliable mobile tools to handle daily challenges, and the carrier is looking forward to seeing how this year’s participants leverage modern technology to help keep communities safe. The challenge is now open to developers across the US.
